Bridges

A bridge is a fixed prosthesis that replaces one or more missing teeth. It is permanently cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the space(s).

Bridges

At Seaman Family Dentistry, bridges are custom-made to match your natural teeth in color, size, and shape. They can restore your smile to its former glory, improve your bite, and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of position.

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Dental Bridges

Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge in Flagstaff, AZ. They consist of two crowns for the anchoring teeth and a false tooth/teeth in between. The false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.

Cantilever Bridges

Cantilever bridges are used when there are healthy adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth space. For this type of bridge, the pontic is suspended in place by only one crown on one side.

Maryland Bridges

Maryland bridges are also known as resin-bonded bridges or adhesive bridges. These bridges have wing-like attachments on the pontic that are bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth.

Implant-Supported Bridges

An implant-supported bridge is similar to a traditional bridge but uses dental implants instead of crowns for support. This option is ideal for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth.

The Procedure for Dental Bridges

Our dentist in Flagstaff, AZ, will numb the area where the abutment teeth will be prepared. An anesthetic injection will be given before the procedure begins. Next, our dentist will remove a portion of the enamel from the abutment teeth so the bridge can be cemented. Then, our dentist will take an impression of where the bridge will be placed. This impression will be sent to a dental lab where the bridge will be made.

While the permanent bridge is being made, the dentist will place a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth and gums. When the permanent bridge is ready, the temporary bridge will be removed, and the permanent one will be checked and adjusted as necessary to achieve a proper fit. The bridge will then be permanently cemented to the abutment teeth.
